![]() ![]() ![]() Log Book of (Air Commodore) Clifford Westly Busk. Educated Marlborough (1912-14) & Sandhurst. 2/Lt. Suffolk Regt., 1916, Seconded to R.F.C. trained as Obs. to 70 Sqd., as a founder member July 1916 Achieved 1st Victory 6.9.1917 when with Capt. W.D.S.Sanday as his Pilot in Sopwith Strutter A3431 he sent down a Roland C11 in flames over Elincourt. Gazetted Flying Officer (Obs) 7.9.17, Awarded M.C. 20.10.16 "For conspicious gallantry & skill. He has taken part in many reconnaissances & fights & on one occasion shot down an enemy aeroplane. On another occasion, when his Pilot's control wires were cut & the machine went into a spin, he helped to restore stability by leaning far out of the upper side & remained in this position until the machine got home". His tour with 70 Sqd., completed Spring 1917, he returned to Home Establishment & qualified as a Pilot. Employed at C.F.S. as an Instructor of exceptional merit until end of W.W.1. Staying with the R.A.F. as Instructor at Sealand 1919-1923. Posted to 60 Sqd., India 1923, remaining there till 1927. Appointed Armament Officer 25 Group 1928-33, awarded A.F.C. Lon. Gaz. 1.3.1929. Served on the Staff Air H.Q. Iraq as a Sqd. Ldr. 1933-35, then Wing Cdr. H.Q. Flying Training Command till 1938. Promoted Group Capt. 1940, appointed Deputy Director Training (Armament) Air Ministry 1940-43. First Commandant of the Empire Air Armament School 1944, appointed A.O.A. Reserve Command 1946. Created C.B. 1947. Air Force Advisor Officer, U.K. Service Liaison Staff Ottawa, Canada. Retired Air Commodore 1950. Lived at Farvane Cottage, Little Sandhurst, Camberley, Surrey. Died 23.10.1970.

Ldr.) & W/C (Wing Commander) - 15 filled in pages, 6.6.1934 -16.7.1945, pages missing between 8.5.1939-10.4.1940, some blank pages at back removed. Some private notes & maths additions crossed through with felt tip pen on inside covers & 1 internal page. Log Book covers flying in Wapiti, Moth, Victoria, Hart, Valencia, Wallace, Magister, Tuter, Vega, Anson, Battle, Oxford, Proctor, Master II, Wellington (Pilot S.L. Gibson), Hudson. Book is stamped once - O.C. "D" Flight, No.2 F.I. S., Montrose. Inspections of Sqds., of A.T.S., of A.T.C., watching special Bomb Trials. War time - Reporting to A.O.C. No. 25 Group, Inspections, Visit to No.3 Group, Gibson took Busk as a passenger to North Coates & return flight 10.1.1944. A good Logbook to a C.B., M.C., A.F.C. winner who served in both World Wars with at least one claimed destroyed in W.W.1. - good reseach project. Reasonable condition for age. £275

National Archives citation "For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty. Whilst returning to battalion headquarters from the front line with a report upon the situation he was severely wounded in the shoulder, but, after resting for a short while, continued his journey until he was again hit in the leg. He was then taken on a stretcher to a regimental aid post, which he refused to leave until he had dictated his report to another person, although suffering great pain.
