![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1886 Group of Five to Fleet Air Arm & R.A.F. PILOT.1939-1945 Star, Defence and War Medals, Geo. VI Naval General Service Medal 1915-62, one clasp Palestine 1945-48 Lieut. (P). J. Sloane R. N., ((P) = PILOT) General Service Medal 1918-62, EIIR, two bars, Malaya, Near East Flt. Lt. J. Sloane R.A.F. Thanks are due to a collector who has told me that Sloane trained at Rattray with 766 Sqd. flying Fireflies & Seafires in 1946, was with 805 Sqd. on Seafires in Palestine April 1948, where he crashed (hit the deck) 10.5.1948 on H.M.S. Ocean (A 1944 built Aircraft Carrier). Sqd's of the Fleet Air Arm book quotes ...Seafire XV's were banned from deck landings due to technical problems (presume reason for his crash). As a temporary measure No. 805 (Sqd.) used 12 Firefly FR 1's as single seat fighters for further service in H.M.S. Ocean. This date takes in the Palestine Ops. but British Battles & Medals (Spinks) does not list any Aircraft Carriers in the Palestine conflict. So possibly the only Aircraft Carrier in this conflict. All details from Fleet Air Arm books. RARE combination. Mounted as worn. Copy Seafire picture. V.F. £1395
