Connolly, in 60th (Kings Royal Rifle Corps.) 27.3.1856 - 26.10.1866, born Galway, (Ireland). 2nd set. Joined 56th Foot 14.11.1870 - 31.8.1876, "former service of 10 years 215 days in the 3 Batt. 60th Rifles allowed to reckon towards G.C. Pay", then volunteers for transfer to 67th Regt. 1.9.1876 - 12.4.1878. Total service 21 years gives campaigns as AFGHANISTAN 1879 & 80. No L.S.G.C. as in confinement 7.4.66 - 12.4.66 & loss of rank from Cpl. to Pte. N.E.F. £425

1972......bar 1891-2. W. J. Sparkes, A.B., H.M.S. Racer.
William John Sparkes born Stoke Daverel, Devonport 10.7.1865, entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 5.1.1881. Advanced to Able Seaman during the course of his subsequent service aboard H.M.S. Racer from April 1891 until September 1892, he served in the Naval Brigade landed in the Gambia for a Punitive Expedition against Chief Fodeh Cabbah and qualified for his Medal & bar - one of 89 such awards to H.M.S. Racer. Sparkes was discharged ashore ‘time expired’ in July 1893 having twice had a spell in "cells/military prison" 1.5 months & for "Run/Desertion" 3 months. (see picture) Copy Service papers. Medal Roll, duplicate issued 1911, this medal has original E & W Africa medal naming (not 1911 style) - see picture. N.V.F. £425

British War Medal 1914-20 114754 C.P.O., R.N. Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R,. P.O. 1st Cl., H.M.S. Vernon. Khedive's Star 1882 privately named T. Hobbs, B.F.G., (Boy 1st Grade ??) H.M.S. Invincible. mounted as worn; Memorial Plaque Thomas Hobbs.
Extract from the Witu Despatches "Before noon on the 25th Oct. (1890) all my force had reached Kipmi, consisting of H.M.S. Boadicea etc..... Commander Montgomerie with the guns & machine guns carrying out my orders to advance & form a zareba which was occupied with a good store of water for the night. I had every confidence that Cdr. Montgomerie from his experience in the Soudan was fully capable of holding his own & repulsing the enemy with his force of 400 men. The enemy appear to have advanced with some boldness & determination & have little doubt were severely punished. Our casualties were three wounded". This included Expedition to Vitu - THOMAS HOBBS, P.O. 1ST CLASS "BOADICEA" BULLET NECK. part of Cdr. Mongomerie's Zareba, this was the only casualty from Boadicea, the other two were from Conquest.
Thomas Hobbs was born in Yeovil, Somerset, on 9 April 1865. A Labourer by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on Boscawen in November 1880. He served in the Egypt Campaign 1882, when on Invincible, August 1882-August 1883, being advanced to Ordinary Seaman in April 1883. He was promoted to Able Seaman when on the Invincible in February 1885 and Leading Seaman on the Boscawen in November 1887. He served on the Boadicea, April 1888-June 1891, being promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class in April 1889 and Petty Officer 1st Class in September 1890. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer when based at Victory III in February 1898. He was pensioned ashore in April 1903 and joined the R.F.R. in April 1904. With the onset of war Hobbs was mobilized and based firstly at Victory I, then Vernon. He died of died of bronchitis at Haslar Hospital on 20 December 1914, aged 49 years and was buried at Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery. He was the son of John and Ann Hobbs and husband of Eliza Hobbs of Shaftsbury Raod, Henstridge, Somerset. Sold with copied service papers. Memorial Plaque in card envelope with accompanying slip. Copy discharge papers, despatches, casualty list. A VERY GOOD COMPLETE CASUALTY GROUP. Some edge bruising & contact marks, generally V.F. £1,675

BRITISH SOUTH AFRICA COMPANY'S MEDAL 1890-1897

1857 Group of 3. Cape of Good Hope General Service 1880-97, bar Bechuanaland Pte. A. Atkinson, D.E.O.V.R., British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse Rhodesia 1896, Troopr. A. Atkinson, M.R.F., Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 bars Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901. 3134 Tpr. A. Atkinson, 1/Imp. L.H. all official late issues, note these are the only medals issued to him, due to his military movements & changes of Regiments they were not claimed by him till 1909, as follows -
Arthur Francis Atkinson, who was born in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1863, claimed all three of his Medals & clasps in January 1909, shortly before his death in Umtali in May of the following year, aged 54 years.  His submission to the relevant authorities, as quoted from the accompanying copied research:
"This is an application for my Matabele War Medal for 1896-97. I was in the Maxim Detachment, Captain Wheeler. I joined the force in Cape Town.
There is also another Medal due me for Bechuanaland 1898 - Mounted Section, D.E.O.V.R., Captain, now Major Johnson. I joined the Signalling Staff on arrival at the Front.
There is still one more Medal due to me for part of the late Boer War - ‘B’ Squadron, 1st Imperial Light Horse, Captain Bull. I joined this force in Bulawayo.
If the two last named Medals are not in your possession, I would be glad of information as to where I might apply for them."
On receiving the application form for his British South Africa Company’s Medal, Atkinson also stated that he had received compensation of £150 and the coach fare from Bulawayo to Mafeking, after being treated in hospital and discharged at the former place as a result of an eye injury. Sold with copied research. The first with officially corrected surname, very scarce combination of awards, with copy of letter claiming his medals & small picture of him copied from a group photograph. E.F. £1235

2005 Group of 3. India Medal 1895-1902, one bar Relief of Chitral 1895. 2523 Pte. J.Butler 1st Bn East Kent Regt. Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, three bars, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein 2523 Pte. J.Butler. E.Kent Regt. KILLED IN ACTION DRIEFONTEIN 10.3.1900. Army Temperance Association 1893 Medal (unnamed) Presumed his - came with the others. Copy casualty roll, action details.... before these reinforcements could reach the ridge, the enemy's position was stormed in the most gallant manner by the 1st Btn's Essex & Welsh Regt's supported by the 2nd Btn. of the Buffs. The bodies of 102 Boers were afterwards found along the ridge, mainly in the position which they held to the last. On the 10th the Buffs had 1 Officer & 20 men killed; 2 Officers (including Col. Hickson) & 70 men wounded. Good combination of 2 x "Relief of..." V.F. £875

QUEEN'S/KING'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899-1902

1903 No bar. A.PETERSON, ORD: H.M.S. TERRIBLE. Copy discharge papers from Hull, Yorks., served 1898 - 1902, published Q.S.A. roll, China Medal 1900 roll for H.M.S. Orlando, bar TAKU FORTS, Peterson one of the 35 who made up the Naval Brigade at this action, ship took 7 K.I.A. & 48 Wounded in the China actions. N.V.F. £195

1863..two bars Laing's Nek, Belfast. 9806 Pte. W.J. PARK. RIFLE BDE: KILLED IN ACTION, in the V.C. action at BERGENDAL 27.8.1900. From Our Regt's in South Africa - ...the Rifle Brigade again advanced by rushes & "there never was a waver from start to finish" 1 Officer & 21 rifleman were killed, many heroic deeds were done in the assault. Rifleman Durant for carrying Cpl. Weller a distance of 200 yards under a very heavy fire got the V.C. The Officer was Capt. G.L. Lysley - from the Last Post - ...fell while leading his company to attack a strong Boer position at Bergendal. Buller's Despatch 13.9.1900 states "The honours of the assault belong to the Rifle Brigade" Copy casualty roll (states Parke but 9806 number tallies), Last Post, Our Regt's in S. Africa. WOUNDED WONDERFONTEIN 8.1.1901. The Berkshires took 6 casualties in this Boer attack early in 1901. Copy published casualty roll & Regt. details listing the action, giving 1 K.I.A. & 4 wounded. Slight contact wear otherwise N.V.F. £275

1945....three bars Cape Colony, Tugela Heights and Relief of Ladysmith. 6329 Pte. H. Pile, 2/R. Fus. (Royal Fusiliers - City of London Regt.) Severely Wounded Rooidam 5.5.1900 (Initial 'G' but Regt. No. confirms) "......on 5th May General Hunter attacked & defeated the enemy at Rooidam, west of the Kimberley-Warrenton line, THE FUSILIER BRIGADE HAVING ALL THE WORK. The Battle of Rooidam enabled the Mafeking relief column to get a clear start. The column comprised ........& an infantry company made up of 4 sections specially selected from each of the 4 Battalions in the Fusilier Brigade......" The R. Fus. had 16 casualties in this action. Surrey Regt. - E. Surrey Regt. WOUNDED PIETERS HILL 23.2.1900 A very good V.C. action for the East Surrey's. Regt. took 91 wounded between 22-27th on the hill, most casualties on the 23rd. Buffaloes Major Worsley Lodge 99 silver-gilt Medal named Presented to Primo Chris Bolton 1st Deg April 23 1911, 2nd Deg Sept 13th 1912. Hallmarked & box of issue with parchment certificate to Christopher Bolton initiated member of Major Worsley Lodge no. 99 in the town of Middlesbro this 28th day of April, 1911. Q.S.A. The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment served as part of the 26th Indian Division after W.W.2. with service in Burma. The 1st Lincoln’s were the only battalion to serve in Burma and subsequently in Sumatra.
